Is the Coronavirus pandemic accelerating the Future of Work? I think so!
Looking at the current landscape, I see three categories of businesses:
Businesses that got disrupted by the pandemic: those operating in sectors like hospitality, travel, transport, retail, entertainment (non digital), and more;
Businesses that got indirectly impacted by the pandemic but are adapting: these are businesses that were operating in a traditional fashion and not running their operations digitally or with an online infrastructure;
Businesses that are benefiting from the pandemic: these are mostly tech/digital businesses, running most of their operations using cloud based infrastructure and offering online services – and of course familiar with the concept of “flexible working environment”.
Leaving aside the first category, which could have not prepared for the current market dynamics, it is clear to me that digital transformation is a component that could have helped more businesses mitigate their risk exposure. Coronavirus, it turns out, might be a great catalyst for business transformation.
An interesting read for me this week was from Heather E. McGowan at Forbes, talking about how the Coronavirus pandemic is accelerating the Future Of Work – this is touching on people and culture (key for modern organisations).
I found myself reading a lot of remote related articles and guides this week. My Twitter feed was full of great resources shared by companies I respect to help businesses navigate the transition, and thought it would be useful to gather together my favourites.
Before diving into that, I wanted to share some links of companies hiring. Hiring is not part of our focus at Humaans, but as businesses are deeply challenged by this health emergency and forced to reduce their workforce, circulating lists of companies still looking for talent might be helpful:
This is a list of 1589 remote tech jobs from 100+ companies hiring remotely (this includes folks like GitHub, Automattic, InVision, and more);
This is a thread on Hacker News with companies hiring right now;
stillhiring.io is constantly updated with the latest opening at companies from all over the world;
candor.co is currently tracking 4,371 companies and providing live updates of who’s hiring, who’s on a hiring freeze or who’s laying off;
In terms of resources, to me the most interesting ones were those covering business aspects like onboarding, building trust and dealing with difficult conversations – particularly challenging if you’re new to remote work.
Remote onboarding

Stay sane, focused and productive while WFH
I didn’t know Benedikt Lehnert (Director of Design at Microsoft) until this week. He put together a list of best practices and tips to stay sane, focused and productive when working from home. Front on keeping a great culture while remote
I love Front. And I love how Mathilde Collin (co-founder and CEO) is leading the company and promoting an amazing culture. She summarised in this article 25 things they implemented to keep their culture great while operating remotely. We’re still running our survey to understand what the most pressing areas for businesses right now are, given the Covid-19 emergency. At Humaans, we’d love to help with our technology in any way we can. It would be of massive value if you could spare a moment to answer a few questions and share with your network. The results of the survey will also be shared (anonymously) to benefit the community.
I hope you enjoyed reading, and if you have thoughts or feedback you can reach me on Twitter.
Have a wonderful Sunday,
Giovanni
